Passing of Christopher Curtis Sensei

Former  Hawaii Ki Federation Chief instructor Christopher Curtis Sensei, 8th Dan of Shinshintoitsu Aikido, passed away June 9, 2023, at 12:53 pm.

Curtis sensei started training in Aikido as a student of Koichi Tohei sensei in 1968 in New York City. After moving to Maui, he continued training with his teacher Koichi Tohei Sensei (Japan) and Shinichi Suzuki Sensei (Maui) in 1974.

He devoted himself to teaching Ki Aikido and Ki Principles throughout Hawaii, the United States, and Europe for many years. We sincerely appreciate his effort for the Ki Society.

We pray that he rests in peace, and we extend our sympathy to his family and students.

Shinichi Tohei Sensei’s Japanese book has been translated into Chinese and published in Taiwan

Shinichi Tohei Sensei’s Japanese book published in 2022 “「調子いい!」が続く姿勢と呼吸の整え方(How to keep good condition with coordination of mind and body, and Ki Breathing)“ has been translated into Chinese and published in Taiwan.

This book is based on Shinichi sensei’s lecture when he appeared on TV program called “Asaichi” broadcasting by NHK in Japan. The theme was “Life with Ki-Aikido” and he told how to practice right posture and Ki breathing to get mind and body that don’t get tired easily.

There are students who practice Ki-Aikido in Taiwan. We hope this book will help their Ki-Aikido practice and daily life.

The Maintenance of Fluorescent Lighting in the Tenshinkan Dojo

Today it rained in Tochigi for the first time in a long time due to the approaching typhoon.

I say a long time because the rainy season ended just a week ago.

This year’s “TSUYU” is very much like the rainy season. It has been long and wet, with no sunshine.( I wrote more about “TSUYU” in last month’s HQ NEWS). But this week, the sunny weather was so nice that it was exciting to do the laundry.

This is a photo of the figs at the Tenshinkan Dojo in June.

Figs dripping with water

They are soaking up all the moisture from the rain.

The moss between the stones on the ground is also very attractive and fluffy in the rainy season.

Although not yet very mossy in the photo, the stone paved in the Tenshinkan Dojo is this round stone.

There are changes not only outside the Dojo, but also inside the Dojo.

Can you see it in the photo?

Lobby of the Tenshinkan Dojo

The news is that the fluorescent lights in the lobby ceiling have been changed. They were broken in the big earthquake earlier this year, so for safety reasons we have fixed them.

By the way, do you have any memories at this lobby?

Before the Pandemic, we used to have a big party in the lobby every night when we had World Camp.

Every year someone would bring a souvenir drink from each country (vodka from Russia, wine from each country, etc.) or a snack (cheese or ham from Spain, chocolate from Belgium, macadamia nuts from Hawaii, beef jerky or smoked salmon from the USA, etc.) and we would share it. Everyone also likes sake which made in Tochigi, and drinks sake together. It is a very pleasant exchange.

Repairing the electricity in the ceiling which we did might sound like a minor change to you but for us it is a future wish to welcome you soon after this Pandemic.

We are looking forward to seeing you all at Tenshinkan Dojo and having a nice party in the lobby with you.

10th Anniversary of Master Koichi Tohei Sensei’s Passing

What is the season of June like in your country?

In Japan, it is season when it rains a lot. We call this time of year when it rains a lot “TSUYU” and we say “TSUYU is here again this year”. The “YU” in “TSUYU” is a Chinese character meaning “rain”.

Before I tell you about this rainy season in June, I would like to give you a late update on our dojo in May.

May is the month when the sun starts to shine as much as it does in July and August, and the amount of UV radiation is surprisingly high.

This is the time of year when the plants that sprouted in April come alive and dance in the sun!

This is the Azalea that brightens up Tenshinkan Dojo entrance and welcomes everyone who came to here.

There is also a flower called “Satsuki” which is so similar to the azalea that it is completely indistinguishable from it. “Satsuki” means “May” in the ancient Japanese calendar.  I thought it would be interesting for those of you who are interested in Japan or who are learning Japanese, and while I was researching whether this flower is an Azalea or a Satsuki Azalea, I thought “I really wish this flower was a Satsuki Azalea”.

Such a month of May has an important date that is indispensable for us. It is the 19th of May, the anniversary of Master Koichi Tohei Sensei’s passing. Shinichi Tohei Sensei and his wife visited the grave paying tribute to Master Koichi Tohei sensei as this day marks a decade anniversary of his passing.

Master Koichi Tohei Sensei and his family’s grave: You can visit the grave when you come to Tenshinkan Dojo.

Before the spread of Covid-19, on the anniversary of Master Koichi Tohei Sensei’s passing, we would invite instructors from all over the world to a special teaching session with Shinichi Tohei Sensei on the weekend before or after 19th of May. Together with the participants, we visited Master Koichi Tohei Sensei’s grave and, in the evening, we had dinner.

We hope that one day we will be able to visit Master Koichi Tohei Sensei’s grave and mourn for him with you again, although we have not been able to do so for the last two years due to the Covid-19. And We hope your lives will soon return to normal.
